A physics-based fuel consumption model using real drag coefficients (Cd), frontal areas, rolling resistance coefficients (Crr) and drivetrain efficiency data for 86 Australian-market vehicles. The model calculates steady-state cruise consumption at any speed from 30โ140 km/h using the road load equation: P = ยฝฯCdAvยณ + CrrMgv + P_aux.
Vehicles include Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Toyota LandCruiser 300 and 79 Series, Toyota Prado, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Corolla, RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6, and many more across 20 makes. Both ICE and EV vehicles are supported with appropriate energy densities (34.2 MJ/L for petrol, 3.6 MJ/kWh for electricity). Includes a fuel surcharge calculator for tradies to calculate per-job and per-billable-hour surcharges when fuel prices change.
The My Car or Yours tool lets you pick any two vehicles and compare fuel costs side by side over any distance, with dual consumption curves and a speed breakdown table showing cost differences at every cruising speed from 60โ120 km/h.

TopTradie.Tools is a free, independent tool site built specifically for Australian tradespeople, apprentices and small trade businesses. Every calculator uses current Australian tax rates (FY2025-26), Australian Standards references (AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, AS/NZS 3500, AS1657, BCA), metric measurements and Australian material sizes. No account needed, no data collected, works offline after first load. Built by an Australian for Australians โ because tradies deserve better tools than generic American calculators that use inches and US tax rates.
Step-by-step guides for common household repairs and DIY projects. No trade license needed โ just basic tools and a bit of confidence.
How to Patch a Hole in Plasterboard โ Small holes can be filled with spackle; medium holes need a plasterboard patch with paper tape and joint compound; large holes require cutting back to studs and screwing in a new piece. Three coats of compound, sanding between each, gives a professional finish.
How to Fix a Dripping Tap โ Turn off the water, remove the handle and headgear, replace the rubber washer, reassemble. Takes 15 minutes and costs under $5 in parts. Ceramic disc taps need a full cartridge replacement instead.
How to Hang a Heavy Mirror or TV on Plasterboard โ Find the studs with a stud finder (450mm or 600mm apart). For heavy items, screw directly into studs with 75mm screws. If studs aren't in the right place, use spring toggles or snap-toggles rated for the weight.
How to Unclog a Blocked Drain โ Start with a plunger, then try a drain snake. For kitchen sinks, remove and clean the trap. Avoid chemical drain cleaners โ they damage pipes. For main sewer blockages, call a plumber with a jet rodder.
How to Seal Around a Bath, Shower or Basin โ Remove old silicone completely, clean with methylated spirits, apply painter's tape, run a steady bead of bathroom-grade silicone, smooth with a wet finger, remove tape immediately. Fill the bath with water before sealing so it cures under load.
How to Paint a Room Like a Professional โ Preparation is 80% of the job: fill holes, sand, sugar-soap wash, mask edges. Cut in with a brush, then roll in W-patterns keeping a wet edge. Two coats minimum. Use flat paint on ceilings, low sheen on walls, semi-gloss on trim.
How to Install a Shelf โ Mark position with a spirit level. Bracket into studs for heavy loads, or use wall plugs for lighter items. Floating shelves use concealed brackets or metal rod systems. Space brackets no more than 600mm apart.
How to Replace a Power Point Cover Plate โ Turn off the circuit at the switchboard and verify with a voltage tester. Remove screws, swap the plate. If the mechanism itself needs replacing, that's licensed electrical work โ call an electrician.
How to Stop a Running Toilet โ Check the flush valve seal (rubber flapper) and the inlet valve float level. A worn seal lets water leak past constantly, wasting up to 60,000 litres per year. Replacement seals cost under $15 and take 10 minutes to fit. Legal DIY in all states.
How to Fix a Sticking Door โ Tighten hinge screws first. If holes are stripped, pack with a glued matchstick. If the door itself is swelling, mark where it sticks, remove the door, and plane or sand the high spot.
How to Replace a Door Handle or Lock Set โ Check your backset measurement (60mm or 70mm) before buying. Most interior handles use a standard mechanism that drops into the existing holes.
How to Build a Garden Raised Bed โ Use H4-treated sleepers for ground contact. A 2400ร1200mm bed lets you reach the centre from both sides. Fill with a 3:1 mix of garden soil and compost.
How to Fix Squeaky Floorboards โ Pre-drill and screw through the board into the joist below with a 50mm countersunk screw. This pulls the board tight and eliminates movement.
How to Repair a Fence Paling or Post โ For rotted posts, cut at ground level, drill a steel post anchor into the old concrete footing, and bolt a new post in. Avoids digging out the old footing.
How to Hang Curtains and Blinds โ Mount brackets 100โ150mm above and 100โ200mm wider than the frame for a larger window appearance. Use a spirit level โ even 2mm shows with a blind.
How to Caulk and Seal Gaps Around Windows and Doors โ Use paintable acrylic sealant for interior gaps. For gaps over 10mm, stuff foam backer rod in first. For exterior, use polyurethane sealant.
How to Replace a Shower Head โ Unscrew the old head, wrap 8โ10 turns of PTFE tape on the thread, screw on the new head. Completely legal DIY. A 3-star WELS head saves about 20,000 litres per year.
How to Clean and Maintain Gutters โ Clean twice a year. Check that water flows freely to downpipes. Re-fix sagging sections โ gutters need about 5mm per metre fall toward the downpipe.
How to Lay Paving or Stepping Stones โ Excavate to paver thickness plus 100mm. Lay 75mm compacted road base, 25mm screeded sand, then pavers with 2โ3mm gaps. Sweep kiln-dried sand into joints.
How to Patch and Repair Concrete โ Clean damaged area, chisel to 25mm depth with square edges, dampen, apply bonding agent, fill with polymer-modified repair mortar in layers no thicker than 20mm.
How to Fix a Leaking Roof (Emergency) โ Tarp and sandbags for immediate rain. Once dry, inspect from inside the roof space โ trace water stains along rafters to the actual entry point. Common sources: cracked ridge capping, displaced tiles, rusted screw holes.
How to Build a Simple Timber Workbench โ 18mm structural plywood top on a 90ร45mm frame with legs at 850โ900mm height. Add diagonal bracing to prevent racking. Costs about $150โ200 in materials.
How to Fix a Sliding Door That Won't Slide โ Clean the bottom track, adjust roller height screws at the bottom edge of the door. Lubricate the track with silicone spray (never oil).
How to Insulate a Ceiling โ R4.0 batts save 20โ30% on heating and cooling. Lay between joists, foil side down. Leave 50mm clearance around non-IC-rated downlights. Don't compress batts.
How to Remove and Replace Tile Grout โ Rake out old grout to 3mm depth minimum. Apply new grout with a rubber float at 45 degrees. Wipe excess with a damp sponge after 15โ20 minutes.
How to Install Smoke Alarms โ All states require working alarms. Interconnected photoelectric alarms are now required in most states. Battery and wireless models are legal DIY; hardwired must be installed by an electrician.
How to Set Up a Basic Home Workshop โ Essential first purchases: 18V cordless drill/driver, tape measure, spirit level, handsaw, claw hammer. Build a workbench, add a pegboard for organisation.
